There are quite a few of these adapters around now, they are generally
all based around the Zydass (now Atheros sadly) ZD1211 chip.

Given you can buy a ZD1211 based device for around $25 AUD
it would be an interesting project for someone to hook their
own micro up to one and provide similiar functionality.
