Well, to tell if you're pointing in the right direction, you could try using
one of the following:

1.  a huge spotlight at night...  Point the Galaxy at the spotlight.  Only
problem with this approach is it will tend to arouse suspicion and you may
get a visit from the boys in blue. ;-)

2.  Use UHF CB as a "locator beacon".  Have someone on the roof at one end
with a handheld UHF CB.  At the other end, use a directional antenna
connected to another UHF CB or scanner to find the strongest signal
direction.  When you know where the strongest signal is coming from, realign
the WLAN antenna to point in the same direction.  Repeat the procedure for
the other end of the link.

3.  Use a compass and a map to aim your antennas.  This won't take into
account reflections which may be stronger (and more useful) than the direct
signal.

If this doesn't help, you may need to look for another helpful person who
can host a node for you to route via...
