[MLB-WIRELESS] merits of simple omni design

Hi,

I have seen on the web a very simple omni design at:

Now I guess such a simple design wouldn't be as effective as a larger
omni. The author states it is way better than the stock tiny antennas
available, just curious if anyone has any opinions on how this design
stacks up (i.e. it is better than nothing, but how much better?).
