Thanks for the suggestions, folks.

I couldn't get Mac TFTP to work.

But it transpires the older firmware downloaded from the US site 
seems to have fixed the problem - must be something awry in the newer 
firmware from the .au site.

Such a simple solution. I'm embarrassed I didn't try it sooner!
