HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Standing Committee on Communications, Information

Inquiry into wireless broadband technologies
Att: National media & IT reporters
STORY ON: Monday 11 November 2002, after 12:30pm
Report to be released on current and potential uses of wireless broadband
technologies
The House of Representatives Communications Committee will this Monday (11
November 2002) release the report of its inquiry into the current and
potential uses of wireless broadband technologies.
The report will be tabled in the House of Representatives just after
12.30pm.
The report contains recommendations aimed at improving the take-up of
wireless broadband in metropolitan, regional and remote Australia to help
deliver better communications services to individuals, families, communities
and businesses.
The inquiry commenced in April 2002, and held nine public hearings in six
cities. More than 80 people addressed the committee at these public hearings
and at private briefings. The committee received 60 submissions from a wide
range of organisations, including major telcos, educational bodies, state
and territory governments, community wireless groups, and interested
individuals.
Background:
In simple terms, broadband allows for high-speed data transfer, providing
vastly improved Internet access with a far higher level of interactivity,
but also enabling services such as digital video on demand, simultaneous
phone and data and a range of applications and content that can reduce the
cost of doing business and delivering government services.
Wireless technology can be used to provide broadband services over the
airwaves, thereby providing unwired networking and on-line services,
mobility and convenience for business users, an alternative to existing
wired networks and a new range of specialist applications.
The Committee will recommend whether Government should make any changes to
the telecommunications regulatory regime to ensure that Australia extracts
the maximum economic and social benefits from the use of wireless broadband
technologies.
Submissions to the inquiry and public hearing transcripts can be read or
