I had similar results with the St Albans nodes while wardriving on 
Saturday.  All I managed to prove is that the NW 'burbs are a 802.11b 
desert.  Only node "found" all day was Barry's AP, which at least confirmed 
the gear was working. :)

There is another detailed wardrive planned soon.  Maybe more news as it 
comes to hand. :)

You need to change the feed to something suitable for 2.4 GHz,  but yes, 
those small satellite dishes should have a little over 20dB gain, if 
properly fed.
