I swapped my 10mbps 2yr old 5port hub to a $60(discount) N-WAY 8port 10/100
switch. I am not sure if it have any sort of intellegence in management but
I am sure it's a 1600mbps backbone for fullduplex. It has been on for(from
the date on the receipt Wed 6th Mar 2002) you count ;). Haven't been
powerdown, have been serving the 7 machines at my place 24x7.

Switching it off for the first time :P and tearing off the screws, revealed
some Realtek chips in it. Sure realtek are not race breed but they are kinda
OK and really affordable for me. $15 for a 10/100mbps network card and $60
for a 8port 10/100mbps switch is cheap and reliable. I don't even know if
the $17 NIC supports DMA that takes off load from the cpu. Certainly not
best performance.

I haven't heard of a switch or hub that gives problem and a 'reboot' that
fixes it..

That sounds like some cheap switches we've got. :-( Annoying things. I've
got a timer on the worst offender to power cycle it several times during the
day on weekends, so those logging in remotely aren't off for more than a few
hours worst case... During the week, I just hit the power toggle button on
the timer twice to execute a power cycle manually. :)

Oh well, hope to ditch those next year, I've put in a submission for a high
end 40 port switch to replace that crap. :)
