actually want to connect to me in ways that static routes can't handle".
For me, it just seems overkill right now, but it's probably a good idea
for the future.
My site has a single fixed link to another 150m south of me. Both sites
are using a single minitar in a box for around $120 total setup cost;

This uses the built in omni and a corner reflector to make it a little
directional. Combined with the minitar's AP+bridge mode this allows
client connections (laptop etc), and a bridge to the other site (which
also gets client connections).
If I was to connect up more sites, I would probably just grow this
(adding them as clients or bridged) till it became unworkable, then
consider putting up a second unit.
I'm not sure at what point the transition to BGB becomes necessary.
Probably when I start connecting sites that have hops to other sites.
When it happens, I'll start reading your document with more
enthusiasm :-)
