hasnt OpenWRT gone a long way in assisting with this?

It is an unfortunate turn of events that has seen HAM radio taken from 
the forefront of technological development in the
post war years to just another hobby group waiting for the next big 
break through by the corporate world!!

Generally we are at the mercy of the consumer market.  However, that 
being said, what hams do well is to take a
commercial concept, adopt it and push it to its limits of its use either 
by peripheral devices or redevelopment of the
base product, but, sadly, most of us are appliance operators.

we can do about it but that doesnt mean we shouldnt try.

maybe?  maybe a change in the regulations as to carrying third party 
traffic is needed???  I dont have all the answers.
