There is a marked difference between RF circuits needed for 2.4 and that 
of 5.8.  Let alone want ALL other frequencies inbetween.

But I agree that  *within the 2.4 GHz* and *within the 5 GHz* bands, 
treating them seperately, that firmware could indeed hold the key to
opening up each band in it's entirety.  It would be nice to think that a 
simple "hack" of firmware to allow a 2.4 through to 5.8 GHz
data transceiver to be created, but me tinks a pipe dream.
