Came across this today:
http://www.meshdynamics.com
They are sellers of a proprietary mesh networking system that uses
off-the shelf hardware - Soekeris boards and Senao cards to be exact.
The diagrams are interesting and they make some good points about
single-radio mesh nodes not being scalable - their system uses two or
three radios in each routing node. Their system auto-discovers and
auto-configures nodes, including automatic, dynamic channel selection,
and seamless roaming between APs for mobile clients.
I'd be interested to see if these sorts of features can be incorporated
into open-source wireless network devices such as the WRT54G and the
Meshcube. The Meshcube or a Soekeris board has the advantage of being
able to directly control it's own WLAN radio cards; it would be more
difficult for a WRT54G to control an external AP.
For a truly 'far out' mesh networking system, check out:

They claim to have written code than can control wireless networks with
billions of nodes.
