Hi Matt,
Not too sure of the capabilities of the default firmware, but I know
that some third-party firmwares allow WRT54Gs to act as AP clients and
some give them WDS capabilities - whereby APs can link to each other and
still act as APs in their own right. WDS is similar to a "repeater"
mode for Access Points.
