Theres mini-pci, which is used in laptops ($15ish on eBay)... Or you 
could look for 802.11 chips that you put on a PCB layout of your own. 
For example, something like:

These are usually fairly self-contained, and require few additional 
components to make them go.  Some have separate chips for the 802.11, RF 
and amplifier stages, while some are all-in-one.

You can probably find a chipset that has the features you want, and 
allows you to interface to it in a simpler way that PCMCIA or PCI. 
Admittedly, they're not a module you can just plug in and use, though.
