FCC Adds Airwaves for Services Like Wi-Fi
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has released 255 megahertz
of spectrum for unlicensed Wi-Fi services, adding to the 300 megahertz
spectrum already available in the 5 gigahertz band. FCC chair Michael
Powell stated that the new spectrum will improve the quality and
competition of wireless Internet service, as well as open rural areas to
high speed wireless access. However, some critics, such as Jim Snider of
the New America Foundation, believe that the FCC must expand access to
lower frequencies, especially in the "grossly underutilized" broadcast
bands, if the agency would encourage wide-spread affordable wireless
broadband. The FCC also decided to expand a $400 million program to help
rural health facilities defray their telecommunications costs.
