Well, it would partly work, but you wouldn't be able to dial (afaik) as the
soundcard input doesn't detect DTMF (afaik). You'd still need to dial via
the software phone.

You can get USB adapters that standard phones plug in to, which work fine.
They're not incredibly cheap though (about the same cost as a cheap VOIP
handset). I think Grandstream make some.

Your other options are things like:

or something similar. You do bring up an interesting point, I wonder if
there's any sound card drivers (for linux/etc) that allow you to bridge
straight standard PSTN to sound card through an adapter. You couldn't do
straight to soundcard for a standard phone as (from memory) they require 22V
DC to ring.
