great point Barry ... it's sad to see you node go :( it's been a guiding
light, as have some others around. Very important in this regard, and
something you shouldn't overlook in what your node achieved.
this begs the question from me ... are there any community _owned_
nodes? or thoughts on this?
To me .. the idea of being a contributor to nodes all over Melbourne is
more thrilling and satisfying than just sitting in front of your my own
terminal and setup all the time. If making links is slow in your area,
help out with links in another! this _has_ to flow on somehow ... and
hopefully increase your chances of something happening in your area
quicker than not.
I know in regard NodeFPU, I've donated equip, (so has Troy/txrx and
others like Vak and Mibberz, grant etc etc by helping out ) to the
communal effort, I'm quite happy to 'lose' something to gain something
more. I'm quite happy to 'jump the border' and help out in other areas
to my own, as many others do as well. Actually I've been doing more work
on outside nodes than my own for a while now heh
Whereas the internal network at FPU of course would remain in the
'possession' of the owners, the idea of the router, cable and antenna
being community owned is a good one for us, and basically think this way
.. and starting to look at if there are any others with the same ideas
within MW.
Are there any other existing efforts in this regard? I know looking at a
'backbone' has been talked about ... but where are we in regard this not
from a routing perspective but an organisational one? (coming from
someone who has had a hard time making the meetings in the past few
months and been hanging out to ask this question :\ doh sorry if it's
common knowledge) I also just bought one of those 25dbi antennas to
throw into FPU, to ensure a better link than an omni to FUS .. things
are slowly ramping up for us, and with regard the wireless equipment,
myself as well as the others involved, are keen to look at true
community owned nodes and plans for organisation in this regard.
Organisationally, how have us at FPU considered a 'fair' network such as
this? Methods such as 'spokescouncils'
(http://www.nomasters.org/Members/axxs/spokescouncil for a description)
ensure the even spread of 'having a say', organisation and
decisionmaking, between large meetings of differently minded groups with
a common goal. (If run properly, ie: not moderated/run/organised by any
one group) I think a similar model based around organising of
distribution and organisation of collective resources would work
extrememly well based on a model like this, allowing an 'effective'
distribution rather than numbers of folk, or vocal minorities in any one
area being a controlling factor. Just an idea thrown out into the void,
there are many ways to organised something along these lines ... but
community being the driving force, would take load off MW committee in
this regard, and increase collective participation in MW as a whole
rather than individual projects, and create the begginings of an
umbrella support system that bridges the committee and the end-geeks,
and helps not hinders both in their efforts while doing so.
Yes innernorth rock, as do outer-east .., but what support do we have
for MW members outside heavily geek populated areas other than their own
efforts or an email to the list asking for help if people can? I think
it just as important to get a stable link happening in areas that
haven't got such a high geek presence, but at least 2 people up for
maintaining a link that others can look to build off as they surface.
Having 'areas' is great in part, but is it bottlenecking the ability of
an umbrella support system run and organised by the people itself
expanding? We already have the basis for such in areas, and I think a
progressive step would be having areas being able to delegate a
representative of their interests when needed (_not_ an official
position, a recallable method of vocalising the groups/areas thoughts).
This could be handled at meetings as per normal .. just more structured.
I've rambled on, but taking from what Barry has said, I think something
'loose' like this could physically represent the way out of being
stalled on a project, and a method for building stronger community
interaction 'across borders', yet still be flexible.
thoughts? anyone else doing or thinking similarly?
