I'd go for a helical antenna, don't have to worry about the polarisation of
the handset antenna or how you hold it.
I've checked out a few DECT phones, they don't mention compatibility
between vendors or even different models, though a number of models do have
the ability to add multiple handsets. They have all sorts of nifty stuff,
able to access the answering machine from the handset, the walkie talkie
thing etc. The other advantage of this is that you can take the phone
around the property with you if you can point the antenna in the right
direction to cover the largest area. I had vague ideas of doing this from
my house and pointing the antenna at a cafe about 100m away if I was
expecting calls during my lunch. But got in trouble for approaching the new
phone with a screwdriver...
