Yo,

Yah, I think I will add in the discussion bit at the end about catering 
for different powered APs.  Tonight I'll finish the last bit off.

But, yes, you can get linear regulators that you can adjust the output
voltage for by fitting different resistors.  I found that over about 7m 
of CAT5 I measured 1.3ohm resistance on the powered pair and that 
including the 0.4V drop from the diode about 1V was being dropped on the 
cable.  The input to the 7805 was about 10.6V.  It could be the reason 
you're getting the AP to work is that it actually runs on 3.3V internally.  
I don't know, I haven't opened mine up.  Can anyone see a 5V->3.3V 
switchmode or linear converter in the DWL-900AP?
