Good answer.
If you are not familiar with any Linux distro and don't particularly
want to be, pick a "router" distro. If you don't have any particular
loyalty and want to learn a bit about linux for router type
applications, pick Debian.
One potential router distro to consider would be leaf.sourceforge.net,
which is actually a collection of router distros that grew out of the
original LRP (Linux Router Project). Included is an 8M wireless router
distro designed to be burned to flash, though the bearing distro might
better fit your needs.
