[MLB-WIRELESS] hostap drivers, compaq wl200, and debian

FYI, for anyone trying to get this working. i spent quite a few hours
on this (not all wasted, i ended up with the latest CVS version of
hostap and a much better understanding of how pcmcia stuff works in
debian).

anyway, i thought that others on MW & innernorth might benefit from
this. it's useful info that needs to be archived in a few places anyway
:)

ob-MW: a new wireless router with two WL-200 cards is going up on a hill
in the preston/east coburg area Real Soon Now. one card with a
directional pointing over to pascoe-vale area, and one with a 180 deg.
slotted waveguide facing south (towards the city).

Subject: please add README.Debian file

Package: hostap-source
Version: 2002.10.12-1

new users of hostap-source may avoid many wasted hours if the following
information is in a README.Debian file. it took me hours to get this
knowledge, i want it to be easy for the next person who needs it.

the following applies to pcmcia based cards, including those in
pcmcia-to-pci cradles (e.g. compaq wl200)

1.  edit /usr/src/modules/hostap-source/Makefile so that the PCMCIA_PATH
points to the pcmcia-cs sources. e.g.

PCMCIA_PATH=/usr/src/modules/pcmcia-cs

if you don't do this, then you'll get the following error when you try
to load the drivers (i.e. by running "/etc/init.d/pcmcia start")

hostap_cs: CardServices release does not match!

2. if you're using a compaq wl-200 card (and probably other devices
that use Cirrus PD6729 PCI-to-PCMCIA adaptors or similar), edit
/etc/default/pcmcia so that:

PCIC_OPTS="irq_mode=1"

without this, hostap_cs will recognise the card but assign an incorrect
IRQ to it and be unable to communicate with it.

i wasted many hours compiling and recompiling different versions of
pcmcia-cs and hostap and the kernel before i found this out.
