the thing is, i don't think that the dlink does suck that badly. i've
got a 900AP+ myself and i'm quite happy with it. the dlink's Rx
sensitivity is nowhere near as good as, say, the cisco cards (IIRC, -94
or -95dbm @1Mbps) but they're at least average. there are worse cards,
but not many that are better...and those that are better cost 2 or 3
times the price.
i suspect that 802.11g is going to be very long on promise, and very
short on delivery. no matter who manufactures the card. it's just a
Big Number<tm> in an industry where Big Numbers sell product, regardless
of the actual relationship between reality & the Big Number in question.
"wow! this 802.11g card is capable of 54Mbps. that's really uber-cool,
so i'll ignore the fact that for all practical purposes it's no better
than this 802.11b card that will get the same 1 or 2Mbps that i'll
actually get in real life usage".
802.11g might make a difference inside an office (which is, after all,
the primary market for WiFi devices), but it's going to make no
difference at all for long-distance links.
