[MLB-WIRELESS] Access Points

A friend is currently running ye olde 2MBit Wavelan ISA cards attached to
486's running LRP. He's concerned that the PC's present a potential fire
hazard and he also wants to get more than 2Mbit. I have thrown the option
of a Mini-ITX PC with some USB devices in it (run over POE as the Mini-ITX
case requires 12V) but this is very quickly getting quite pricey. Proper
access points run over POE might be better.
I have no experience with AP's, just mucked with client devices. He has
two stations he needs to make contact with, possibly a 3rd. The first
being 2km away and the 2nd 500m away. All links are currently establish
with their own pair of wavelan cards (he has two 486's in the roof) and
Conifer antennas. The third link is about 2.5km away.
How would one access point in his roof go for servicing links 1 and 2 if
the antennas were fed off the one AP care of a splitter? Would he be
better of putting an omni in place?
What mode would the AP be put into? Ethernet bridging, infrastructure or
ad-hoc? What is a good cheap AP to do this with (say, DWL-900AP+ or some
other Global Sun Tech made derivative?) Using Mini-ITX's is fine but the
cost would blow out rather fast for each end compared to using APs.
