[MLB-WIRELESS] SVEC WL16P PCMCIA adapter

I have just got 2 SVEC WL16P cards from The Incredible Bulk
 
I was naively hoping that I would plug them in to the laptops, running
XP Pro and voila I would be up and running
 
Regrettably not so
 
The LAN card utility shows both the cards:
 
  scanning in 801.11 Ad hoc mode
  the ESSID mode is ANY
  TX rate is AUTO
 
  XP recognises both cards are and shows the signal strength as
excellent 
  They have fleetingly connected for seconds then drop back to scanning
   The laptops are beside each other
 
Any ideas?
