Dear Colleague

The School of Information & Systems (SIMS), Monash University,
cordially invites your participation in a seminar presentation on
Wednesday 10 December, 3.30-530pm,  Lecture theatre S2.32 at the
Caulfield Campus of Monash (travel directions below).  Please

INTERNATIONAL TRENDS IN ELECTRONIC COMMUNITY  NETWORKING - --
GOVERNMENT ENGAGEMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY

Prof. Mike Gurstein, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Dr Peter
Day, University of Brighton, UK.

Prof Gurstein and Dr Day are both key figures in community networks
internationally, and this is an opportunity to hear of their work in
establishing community networks during their short stay in Melbourne
during work with the Centre for Community Networking Research, SIMS.
Issues around the role of government in supporting sustainable
networks to enhance social development and social capital will be
addressed by them.

... Dr. Gurstein was a Management Advisor with the United
Nations ... Associate Chair in the Management of
Technological Change at the University College of Cape Breton and the
Founder Director of the Centre for Community and Enterprise
Networking.  His publications include "Community Informatics:  Enabling
Communities with Information and Communications Technologies" ...
  and "Community Innovation  Systems: ICT and Development in a Rural
and Remote Community" ...  on
the Board of the Vancouver Community Network, the British Columbia
Community Networking Association, Telecommunities Canada, and a
Charter Member of the Steering Committee of the Global Community
Networking Partnership.  ... chair of
the newly-established Community Informatics Research Network (CIRN),
Inc., ... in  which the Centre for Community Networking Research at Monash is
closely involved.

Beyond his teaching position at Brighton University, Peter Day is a
director of the Sussex Community Internet Project (SCIP) ...
  was a Steering Group member of the recent Brighton & Hove City
Council funded 'Information and Communication Development' (ICD) pilot
project.  ICD project was a 12 month pilot established to provide ICT
training and identify the needs of the community and voluntary sector
as a precursor to the development of a city-wide community information
network (CIN).  ... currently co-editing two books [about] local community
attempts to utilise ICTs.  ... Open Society Institute (OSI) community
informatics consultancy in Hungary. ... member of Computer Professionals
for Social Responsibility (CSPR), a founder member of the UK Telecottage
Association, and a co-chair of the newly established Community
Informatics Research Network.
