Dear wireless.org.au,
I have a Netgear MA311 PCI adapter (802.11b?) which receives signal from a Netgear MR314 Wireless router (Modem is DSL 500kps). The problem is that the signal does not always work as the receiving card is about 20 metres away from the router. There are no brick walls, but there is a cordless phone in the house which is a fair distance from the router and PCI adapter, and is not really in line with the signal. I have checked by placing the receiving PC (with MA311 PCI adapter) next to the router, and the signal strength and link quality are both 100%, so there is no problem with the equipment. A coathanger and foil boosts the signal when 20 metres away and the internet works most of the time with this, although sometimes fades and then falls out completely. I was just wanting to buy an antenna to boost the signal received.
I received this from netgear - "The connector type for the antenna is called a RP-SMA. (Reverse gender SMA). You could purchase a larger antenna from a 3rd party, however I must stress this is not supported or recommended by NetGear, and as such I cannot advise as to a particular model you could use."
I was wondering if you have an antenna with this connector type that I could run up the wall, what you could recommend, and if this antenna can be easily connected to the MA311 card or if it has to be done internally (inside the card)?
Thank you for your time,
Tristan.
