Yes..
To increase security, you generally want to plug your AP into a router -
by it a hardware router or a PC acting as one.
I currently have my AP going into a hub, it it rebroadcasts all the
traffic going over the hub into the ether - a less than ideal situation
security-wise :)
as for freeBSD, I'm not the person to ask :)
