Very interesting.  Actually, the first generation of software defined radios
is already here - though only processing at IFs in the sudio range.  Look at
the range of software for modes such as PSK-31, SSTV, packet radio and
others which can use the soundcard and a PC for signal processing.  Just
around the corner (Dec 2002) is a piece of software which will be capable of
demodulating "DRM" - "Digital Radio Mondiale" digital shortwave radio
broadcasts.  Again, this runs on a PC.

Eventually (it's already starting to happen), a lot of this signal
processing will be moved into the radio itself, leading to flexibility of
operation never seen before.  Want a new mode, such as going from 802.11b to
802.11g?  No need to buy anything, just download the firmware upgrade and
away you go! :)

As for the spectrum of the commons, interesting concept.  That'll certainly
raise a few eyebrows... :)
