Interesting bit of fluff on how to keep 802.11b sustainable in an
increasingly crowded microcosm. Not sure that he's thought it through
properly, though.

The 802.11 Mosh Pit

 BY NIKI SCEVAK

Wireless access points are sprouting up, but before too long the unregulated
spectrum in which they operate in will become unusable.

The unlicensed 2.4Ghz spectrum is a classic double-edged sword. As well as
competing with street lamps and microwaves for airtime, 802.11 wireless
networks are increasingly jostling amongst themselves. The more popular the
standard becomes, the more the performance will diminish.

At present an 802.11 access point has no regard for others around it. There
is only the concept of full power or no power, on or off. The veritable
shouting is fine, but only if it is the sole person in the room. If not,
conversation can prove near impossible.
