Fed: Authority sets official limits to radio wave exposure Radiation
CANBERRA, May 7 AAP - Australia's radiation protection authority set
official limits today on human exposure to radiofrequency radiation, such as
that emitted from mobile phone towers.
The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Authority (ARPANSA)
approved and published the standard for human exposure to radiation in the
range from 3 kHz (kilohertz) to 300 GHz (gigahertz).
Until now, guidelines issued by the National Health and Medical Research
Council in 1998 were interim measures.
Now ARPANSA has set a limit and has written to state and territory
regulators and the Australian Communications Authority recommending the
standard become law.
``The new ARPANSA standard protects people from the known health effects of
RF (radiofrequency) radiation and is more up to date than the expired 1998
Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand interim standard it
replaces,'' Dr Loy said in a statement.
The new standard drew on the most recent research and was in line with world
standards, he said.
The ARPANSA standard was in fact more detailed than international guidelines
and was technically superior to earlier standards, Dr Loy said.
``In particular, all limits are fully defined so as to allow unambiguous
interpretation by relevant regulatory bodies,'' Dr Loy said.
``Compliance may actually be easier to demonstrate now than in the past
because of more advanced technology and computational methods.''
The standard is the result of working group recommendations assembled from
2000.
