Study Finds Some Setbacks for Broadband
By SUZANNE KAPNER
The economic downturn, the bursting of the dot-com bubble and the effects of
last year's terrorist attacks have sharply slowed the adoption of broadband
services, postponing the point at which these services will be widely
accepted, according to a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers.
The study, to be published tomorrow, estimates that access to broadband will
remain limited until 2006, far later than analysts had anticipated. Only
after that point will it begin to reach enough households to gain the
critical mass that is the necessary underpinning for companies to make a
profit from multimedia downloads, online games and other types of customized
content that rely on broadband.
