All,
Ive made 5 cans so far, from Milo to Coffee to Home Brew cans (which I think was closest to the http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cantennahowto.html specs).
What I have learned is that due to the ease of making these things -- along wth the cost, its kinda academic to discuss optimal cans. For example, although the Home Brew can is better spec'ed, the Milo (medium size one) tin works the best of all Ive made. (Ive estimated up to 10 - 14db gain, though Id never put money on that being accurate, its my best effort with netstumbler and comapred against one commercial yagi.)
The difference between the worst can and the best can is pretty minimal, and unless you are trying to do many km's, most should be fine. Ive had mine working at 4kms full speed, and have been able to netstumble from 8kms with NO LOS at all. (behind and below the peak of a hill.)
Ive spent a degree of effort on getting the guide in the right spot, and at the right length, and I think this is as big of a factor as the can size.
I guess my point is, dont wait for someone to tell you what the best can is, just go get some of the gear and make some! (I should also point out the first one I made was the best...!) Most everyone has a Milo or Coffee tin, and if you brew those 1.7kg coopers brews, then your set!
Good Luck (and get into it!)
Greg.
