The only issue here is it my be more appropriate to have routers, rather
than bridges between the sites.  Especially if you're going to use a modem
as a backup.

This is where the good old analogue technologies come in.  Wonder what you
can tune in with an old Galaxy downconverter and an ordinary TV set.  With
one of these DCs, the 2.4 GHz band would start at the very bottom of most
UHF TV dials and extend up for about 7-8 channels.  In a quiet environment,
you should just see "snow" on the TV.  ATV transmissions are about 2-3
"normal" TV channels wide, and will appear distorted (because they use FM,
not AM).  Other transmissions will look like various forms of TV
interference, if they're present.  The good old Microwave oven might present
an interesting picture (black screen?). :)

The Galaxy converter needs to be unmodified and fed with DC power (at least
12V) down the coax (make sure you don't let the DC supply get into your
telly, it won't do that any good!).
