I would have to agree to what Ryan is talking about here, as he
mentioned these people are Australian and most of the ones I have
purchased from have all had shops that I have visited on other
occasions.
I have my own supplier now, so I don't tend to go to swap meets as much,
but to save a few bucks on something, or if someone asks me for the
absolute cheapest price then this is where I get it.
Over the last 3-4 years I have spent over $15,000 buying items from swap
meets, with a retail value somewhere closer to $25,000, maybe even
higher considering I used to live in the country.
There are a few catches though, but I've seen people burned just as bad
buying from retail shops that have closed down a week later anyway, your
warranty is pretty useless then too isn't it?
I would not recommend swap meets to just anyone though, because of the
chance that things may not work out for you, but personally I look at
how much I have saved so far, and I'll happily head off to the next one,
I generally buy from the same people, its no different than meeting them
in a shop.
If it wasn't for swap meets then I would not be working in the compuer
industry at all, and my computer knowledge would be far far less than
that which it is.
On the original topic though, John Carmack updated his .plan with some
info on the new Doom and gf4's, from what I read on bluesnews.com they
dont seem to be the best choice at the moment anyway.
Dennis.

Anthony you do realise you are digging yourself a deeper and deeper hole
with all of these very bold statements. I can sense there are a lot of
people itching to disagree with you including myself.
If your friends managed to buy dodgy hardware and then not find the
origional seller then they sound like they are not the sort of people
who should actually be buying computer peripherals at such a place.
There are several simple steps to take when purchasing equipment from
swapmeets which include: obtaining a business card or at least a contact
name and phone number on the reciept. And also asking for their warranty
period to be written on the receipt.
As for your statement about buy Australian what exactly are you
meaning??
These people ARE Australian. Are you suggesting they are not Australian
because the majority are from Asian decent??
And I'm sure computer business's are not goign out of business because
of swapmeets. The only people who buy from swapmeets are people who
know about PC's and know that they can get the best price and do it
themselves there.
The majority of the population don't know how to piece together hardware
and will go to a store that puts it together for them. If computer
retails with shopfronts go out of business it's surely for other
reasons. I happen to know that a lot of the swapmeet storeholders also
run computer shops during weekdays as well and use the Sunday swapmeets
for extra income.

I still stand by my statement about swapmeets, I know many people who
have been ripped off, and couldn't even find the people to get a refund.
I will admit there may be the odd 1 or 2 GOOD vendors at these meets,
but in my experience ive found them to be dodgy and disruptive to the
retail trading of computer hardware/software.
I don't know of any computer retailer that can seriously compete with
these cheap imports who work out of these little stalls.
All this talk about "Keeping the Jobs in Australia" etc? BUY RETAIL, BUY
AUSTRALIAN.
There are that many computer business's going bankrupt or closing up
because of the swapmeet trade. If it were what its meant to be (people
Selling/Swapping old/used hardware) then it would be cool, but no,
greedy people thought they could make a buck by selling off cheap
imports (hence killing Australian computer retail).
