Hi steve, micheal, all,

This is pretty much teh same question I asked when I first joined.
 sounds like a FAQ entry is in order...

basically I take it that it depends what you want to do and how much you
can do for your self (handyman wise)

You will need

a box. - laptop or mac or PC or anything able to hold a PCMCIA wireless
card. - they dopn't need to be powerful. you should aim for a 24/7
p[resence so low power consumption should be something to consider if
buying a new (well,...) one.

cost = 0 if you have one, $300 -$3000 otherwise

a wireless card and maybe a PCMCIA to PCI bridge (also known as a cradle)
card = $60-120
cradle = $75-130

an external antennae - various types exist but can be basically broken
into two types - Omni and directional.
free - $300

low loss cable to go from the box to the antenna. - this is available on
the tib (www.melbourne.wireless.org.au/tib) at 4.50 a meter.
4.50 - 90

attatchments frm the wireless card to the cable and the cable to the
antenna - lets say less than $100

a note on antennas.
omnis are useful for general access points. directionals are better for
(dedicated) point to point links.

Ask around about modifying and obtaining Galaxy antennas...
