A standard AP will usually have a proprietary on-board operating
system ("firmware") which is relatively hard -to -impossible for the
end user to alter. This device is basically a single-board computer
programmed to operate as an AP using open source software, ie
software that the end user can open up, examine, modify or replace
altogether.
So you can make it do nifty stuff.

It's probably overkill, unless you want your AP to encrypt the camera
stream to a very high degree, or do something else unusual, like act
as a bridge at the same time as an AP.
But I'm no expert. I'm sure I saw one lurking here earlier though :-)
