[MLB-WIRELESS] Problems flashing Compaq WL200s

ok - this is one that I've found happens just to piss me off....

we seem to have two different revisions of the cards - although the batch
numbers seem to be the same...

The card that works with the flash update to fw0.8.3 has the following main
chips:
BASIS COMMUNICATIONS (208 pin IC) with numbers: CL-PD6729-QC-E then
E2456-839H
slightly to the right, we have:
HARRIS with numbers: HFA3841CN and then 9950S 4705140.
This card will update and properly function in AdHoc 802.11 mode.

The card that doesn't work with the update to fw0.8.3 has the following main
chips:
BASIS COMMUNCATIONS (208 pin IC) with numbers: CL-PD6729-QC-E then
E3S18-839H
again, slightly to the right, we have:
HARRIS with numbers: HFA3841CN then 9950S 4082840.
This card will not update to the 0.8.3 firmware provided by SMC.

has anyone found anything out about these cards that I haven't?

Out the 100Base-T, off the firewall, through the router, down the T1,
over the leased line, off the bridge, nothing but Net.
