for the most part, i think the degree of "ad-hoc" linkage will be
fairly low within the backbone portion of the network.

seattlewireless has a simple network structure which might be a good
starting point.

the scheme assumes that people elect to join the backbone at various
levels of connectivity, based on geography and number of
cards/antennae.
