Wouldn't a splitter reduce my range on the external?

Yes, we use this configuration all the time.
There are cheaper alternatives though. If you take a look at the polar
plot for a parabolic grid (or other directional antenna) it should show
coverage in all directions for a small area around the antenna.
Depending on where the antenna is mounted you may find you don't need a
second antenna.
You could also buy a splitter.
